Lymphedema

Lymphedema is a condition of localized fluid retention and tissue swelling caused by compromised lymphatic sytems. The balance between the production and lymphatic drainage is disrupted. This causes an abnormal accumulation of lymph fluid.

A distinction can be made between primary lymphedema and secondary lymphedema.

Primary lymphedema

The primary variant is congenital lymphedema. In this case less lymphatic vessels are present, which can cause swelling through the course of years.

Secondary lymphedema

Lymphedema caused by damage of the lymphatic vessels is called secondary lymphedema. The damage can be caused by the treatment of cancer, thrombosis, long lasting varicose veins or incurred infections such as erysipelas.
Symptoms of lymphedema include swellings, a tired and heavy feeling, pain or tingling, limitations in the movements and/ or limitations in daily functioning, skin disorders and infections.
You can recognize lymphedema by gripping your skin between the 1st and 2nd toe. This should result in a pleat.
